Fashion Revolution urges robust climate targets for brands amid COP28 summit

As the COP28 climate summit unfolds in Dubai, the Fashion Revolution movement has intensified its call on fashion brands to set stringent climate goals in collaboration with their suppliers, as Ecotextile News reported.

Aligned with efforts to tackle climate change, the initiative aims to hold policymakers accountable for ensuring effective decarbonization within the fashion industry.

The sector, responsible for an estimated 8% of global emissions, faces mounting pressure to address its environmental footprint. The Sustainable Apparel Coalition, a consortium committed to sustainable practices, has outlined a plan for a substantial 45% reduction in emissions by 2030. Moreover, brands under the Fashion Pact have pledged to transition to 100% renewable energy in their operations by the same year.

Despite these commitments, emissions stemming from supply chains and consumer use contribute to a staggering 96% and continue to trend upward, countering these efforts, as reported by Reuters. Fashion Revolution highlights that procurement practices emphasizing lower costs are impeding suppliers’ capacity to meet climate targets.

The initiative’s call to action underscores the urgency for comprehensive and coordinated actions by both fashion brands and policymakers to address the climate crisis and drive sustainable transformation within the industry.
